Students from Richland County High School Participate in the 2020 ILMEA All-State Ensembles2/13/2020 Left to right: Colby Garrard (senior/choir) & Kendra Jellison (junior/orchestra) Two students from Richland County High School participated in the 2020 Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) All-State Music Conference. The All-State conference occurred from January 29 until February 1, 2020 in Peoria, IL. These students were selected from a rigorous audition process as the top student-musicians representing over 12,000 schools throughout Illinois. Of roughly 2,400 students that auditioned, only a fraction of students were selected to participate in the event. The two RCHS students selected to participate were Colby Garrard (senior) and Kendra Jellison (junior).
Colby Garrard participated in the 2020 All-State Choir under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Palant from the University of Texas. Colby is a six time participant in the ILMEA District 5 Band & Choir at Eastern Illinois University from 2013-2020. He is a two time recipient of the coveted 1st Superior rating at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Solo & Ensemble Contest. Colby is also a member and currently serves as the president of the Tri-M National Honor Music Society, Chapter 8170 at Richland County High School. Mr. Garrard continues to be an active performer at both Richland County High School and Olney Central College. He has performed with the Marching Tigers (drumline), Honors Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Choir, and musicals at Richland County High School. He has also performed in several musical productions at Olney Central College. Colby represented RCHS at the Lincoln Trail Band Festival in 2018 in Casey, IL. Colby plays on the RCHS football team as a varsity offensive lineman. Kendra Jellison was selected to participate in the 2020 All-State Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Gary Lewis from the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder. Kendra also participated in the All-State Band in 2019. Ms. Jellison is a five time participant in the ILMEA District 5 Bands & Orchestra in years 2014-2020 at Eastern Illinois University. She is a six time recipient of the 1st Superior rating at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Solo & Ensemble Contest. She serves at the Vice President of the RCHS chapter of Tri-M National Honor Music Society. Kendra Jellison has performed with the Marching Tigers (serving as a clarinetist and more recently as drum major), the Honors Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and musicals at Richland County High School. She has performed with the Little Illini Conference Pep Band in 2018, 2019, & 2020. She has also performed in the orchestra pit for two RCHS musical productions in 2018 and 2019. Kendra represented RCHS at the Lincoln Trail Band Festival in 2018 & 2019. She was also awarded scholarships to attend Eastern Music Camp (EMC) in 2018 & 2019, as well as Smith Walbridge Clinics for drum majors in 2019. This band festival was formed to afford the students an opportunity to perform in a concert band consisting of only high school student-musicians of the Little Illini Conference, under the direction of a guest conductor. We are fortunate for the opportunity for the Symphonic Band to participate in the event. There are some that are unable to attend this year, and have elected to write a research project. Those students attending may be found at the bottom of this post. The festival is held at Casey-Westfield High School. There is no cost associated with the Lincoln Trail Band Festival, aside from food money. UPDATED 3/30/2020: RCHS Bands' participation in this event on April 25th has been cancelled. While the event coordinators have not yet cancelled the event, I decided to pull the plug. Simply put, I do not know when the mandate to close schools will be lifted. That being said, I am looking for performance opportunities at Six Flags later in the year. While this is not a certainty, I remain hopeful. I will keep everyone up to date as we receive further details. Feels will be reimbursed in the event that a student is unable to attend, or that we have to cancel for the year. Thank you for your patience. The combined Honors Wind Ensemble & the Symphonic Band (4th term) are participating in the Band Day at Six Flags St. Louis on Saturday, April 25th. The two bands will combine for the music festival. Schools participating in Six Flags Music Festival receive the opportunity to perform their selection of songs in front of a panel of nationally acclaimed judges. Judges will give their comments and every band receives a recording of their performance along with a certificate of participation. Bands who score a superior rating will receive a plaque for their achievement. Performance attire is the orange RCHS department shirt ($10), jeans, and tennis shoes. Students need not purchase a new department shirt should they already have a shirt. The cost for students to participate in the trip is $52.50. Students may use funds from their RCHS Bands Student Account to cover the cost. Parents and family may attend for $32.50 per person. Payments are due Thursday, March 11th. Meals are not provided. Students should bring either money or sack meals for lunch and dinner. We recommend nylon swimsuits with liners. We don’t allow guests to enter the water areas wearing thong bathing suits, regular shorts (including khaki and cargo styles), long pants, street clothes, cut-off shorts, or denim. Because they can damage the rides, we also do not allow swimwear with buttons, snaps, rivets or zippers. But, don’t worry—if you don’t have the appropriate clothing, swimsuits can be purchased on site! Here are more guidelines to help you pick out the best attire for your trip to Hurricane Harbor:
PACKING LIST:
FIRST AID: Our First Aid Station is located by Hurricane Bay on the East side of the Volcano. Our trained staff of Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians are always on duty during waterpark hours.
